Behind the Label: Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard

October 3rd, 2023

The Name
Beckstoffer To Kalon is the vineyard in the Oakville AVA from which we source this single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. It is owned by Andy Beckstoffer. Planted in 1868, the vineyard was named To Kalon, a Greek term which means “ideal physical or moral beauty.”

The Label
In creating the current label for Beckstoffer To Kalon, we pondered once again how to represent the the meaning of the To Kalon. We discovered the work of Viennese-born Alea Pinar Du Pre, an artist who divides her time between Turkey and Amsterdam. Du Pre’s After the Masters series reimagines classic works of art, using modern techniques to imbue them with a bold, nearly futuristic aesthetic.

The piece Realm commissioned from Du Pre is inspired by The Birth of Venus, Sandro Botticelli’s Renaissance classic from circa 1485. Venus, of course, is the goddess of love and beauty, and Du Pre zeroes in on the upper half of her form, working in tones of green, purple, pink and orange. The artist uses small squeeze tubes to meticulously create her paintings line by line, a method she calls “pipe-painting.” This gives her works a kind of holographic effect, and we love how the new label, with its visible horizontal lines, evokes the look of our previous “eye of the beholder” To Kalon label.

Du Pre has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions as well as art fairs across Europe, North America, South America and Istanbul. Her Venus for Realm, measuring 59”x39”, is an acrylic on canvas completed in 2021.
