2012 Comparative Tasting

An Honor to be Included

The 2012 Realm Cellars Beckstoffer Dr. Crane was recently included in a comparative tasting of 2012 vintage Cabernet Sauvignons from Napa Valley and Bordeaux. The tasting format placed iconic Napa Valley Cabernets alongside some of the top Bordeaux Chateaux from the same vintage. A tasting panel of winemakers and sommeliers led by Larry Stone began by assessing the wines blind while making detailed notes. “The objective of this tasting,” Master Stone explained, “is not only to get a sense of vintage character in each region, but also to contrast the evolving styles of these two Cabernet-centric appellations.”

Wines tasted by the group:

Alpha Omega Beckstoffer Dr. Crane
BV Georges de Latour
Chappellet Pritchard Hill
Chateau Palmer
Chateau Pontet Canet
Colgin IX Estate
Opus One
Realm Beckstoffer Dr. Crane
Staglin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

After tasting through the flight, each panelist assigned a ranking to the 12 wines in descending order of perceived quality. Generally the 2012’s from Napa possess high concentration of dark fruit with specific spice and cocoa notes, though each wine showed a distinctive level of weight and ripeness. The tannin structure of the lineup also seemed to be spread across a broad spectrum. For a year that was characterized in Napa as ripe and opulent, many iconic wines showed a backbone of fruit-restraining tannin that will require years of aging to ease. Most tasters in the panel agreed that the mouth feel of their favorite wines played a major role in their ranking.

Hosted at Quintessa each year, the comparative tasting has become somewhat of an annual reunion for Master Sommeliers living in Napa. “Rarely do we get the opportunity to taste so many relevant wines together in the same room. It is an event I look forward to each year, and it is an honor for Realm to be included.” Remarked Realm’s Desi Echavarrie, one of the seven Master Sommeliers in attendance.
