Label Story: Beckstoffer Dr. Crane
The Name: Beckstoffer Dr. Crane is the vineyard in the St. Helena AVA from which we source this single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. It is owned by Andy Beckstoffer. The vineyard was originally planted in 1858 by Dr. George Belden Crane.
The Label: Creating the Dr. Crane label was a journey. It started with the knowledge that the land where this vineyard now stands was once the site of St. Helena’s Chinatown; we were determined to pay homage to this fact on the label. We considered using an old map, or different characters from the Chinese alphabet, but both treatments seemed rather thin. Then we consulted our friend Al Cheng, a longtime supporter of Juan and Realm – one of the guys who helped us out when our 2003 vintage went up in smoke. He turned us on to a proverb attributed to Li Po, a Chinese poet of the Tang dynasty who wrote frequently about wine: “When drinking water, remember the source.” How perfectly this applies to wine…and to the Dr. Crane Vineyard! Al also led us to the San Francisco artist who created the artwork for the label. Working out of his basement studio in Chinatown, this artist – who spoke no English – created a 4’x4’ canvas with the proverb superimposed over traditional Chinese imagery.
